Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that affects an estimated 16 million American adults. It causes severe symptoms that affect how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, caring for themselves and working. Depression is highly treatable with reports of 80% to 90% of people responding well to treatment.
It is often said that depression results from a chemical imbalance, but research suggests that there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, nutrition, gut health, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems. As an adjunct to medication, lifestyle changes including changes to your diet, exercise, and mindfulness exercises may also be recommended.
Anxiety is a natural reaction to stress. While it can be an unpleasant feeling, anxiety itself is not always a bad thing. For example, anxiety about an upcoming interview can help one better prepare for the occasion. However, when anxiety leads to excessive fear that is disproportionate to the situation and hinders one’s ability to function normally, it is classified as an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders are highly treatable and are extremely common, affecting 30% of adults at some point in their lives. The treatment plan may include mindfulness exercises and lifestyle changes in addition to medication.
